A new book blends history, design, and environmental insight, inviting readers to see Penn’s campus—and campuses everywhere—in a new light.

The majority of first-year students began their Penn journey on Tuesday, Aug. 18, with the annual Move-In ritual, which runs like clockwork thanks to Move-In volunteers and staff and eases the transition for first-year students leaving the nest and kicking off their lives as undergraduates.

The design and elegance of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, celebrating its 100 year anniversary this month, is thanks to Paul Philippe Cret, the Weitzman School’s Chief of Design, explains William Whitaker, director of Weitzman’s Architectural Archives.

From the Market Street Wharf on the Delaware River, Penn’s founder Benjamin Franklin began making his mark on the city of Philadelphia in 1723, establishing his home and print shop at 3rd and Market Street. At 4th St. and Arch, he founded The College of Philadelphia (now Penn), and signed the Declaration of Independence at the Pennsylvania Assembly House at 4th and Chestnut.

A lively tour through Philadelphia’s Old City revealed the original sites of the University’s 18th-century campus.

From papermaking to typesetting, Penn’s Common Press has been working to print the Declaration of Independence using the same methods as in 1776. Members of the public can sign up through December to print their own copies.

The Class of 2026 reflected on the 250th anniversary of the United States while looking ahead to its future.

The award-winning historian spoke at Penn’s 270th Commencement.
