PHILADELPHIA – A trio of University of Pennsylvania professors from the School of Arts and Sciences and a senior critic in Penn’s School of Design have been awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded 180 Fellowships to artists, scientists and scholars in the United States and Canada from a pool of nearly 3,000 applicants.

WHAT:“Re-Imagining Cities: Urban Design After the Age of Oil,” a two-day conference at the University of Pennsylvania, will examine cities of the future as envisioned by urban designers and leaders in both public and private sectors in the face of costly energy and global warming.

PHILADELPHIA -- Marilyn Jordan Taylor has been named dean of the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania, effective Oct. 1.

PHILADELPHIA -- The role of anchor institutions in the renaissance of American cities will be discussed at the Urban Anchors in the 21st Century national conference Oct. 8-9.  More than 200 urban professionals, scholars, policymakers, students and others will gather at the University of Pennsylvania with more than 60 national experts in urban affairs.

PHILADELPHIA -- Josh Mosley, a professor in the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design, is among the select artists who will show their work at the Venice Biennale's 52nd International Art Exhibition.  

Eadweard Muybridge’s “Animal Locomotion,” part of the Muybridge collection at Penn, is one of the earliest attempts to use photography as a scientific tool.

Today, the Declaration of Independence stands at the center of America’s founding moment and as a tribute to a new nation’s idealism. In 1776, the language was treated like any other document, edited in ways that caused author Thomas Jefferson angst over its “mutilations.” This year, a special project at Penn’s Common Press this year brought the Declaration to life through a public, interactive papermaking and printing exercise that will continue through this fall, and Penn experts on the Declaration reflect on its words and meaning.
