Three University of Pennsylvania sophomores have received John Thouron Prizes to pursue summer studies at Pembroke College, Cambridge University. The Prize is awarded each year to nine undergraduate students from Harvard University, Yale University and Penn. The award covers tuition, room and board and travel to and from the United States for the eight-week summer study program.
The Penn Thouron Prize recipients:
Isabella Cuan from Sparta, N.J., is majoring in biological basis of behavior in the School of Arts & Sciences. Cuan will study classical British architecture and medicine and disease in European history and conduct independent research in neuroscience.
Emily Hoeven from Fremont, Calif., is majoring in English in the School of Arts & Sciences. Hoeven will study international law, 18th century English literature and art history and conduct an independent research project in literature.
Justin Hopkins from Los Angeles is majoring in political science in the School of Arts & Sciences. Hopkins will study international law and warfare and Western national security and pursue an independent research project in social sciences.
Launched by the family of Sir John Thouron, the scholarship aims to give undergraduate students an understanding of both the shared and differing aspects of British and American cultures.

Penn student develops a way for computer chips to run more efficiently
Fluid Silicon, a platform from President’s Sustainability Prize winner Nhlanhla Mavuso, allows computer chips to continuously monitor their health and self-tune as their characteristics change. The technology has the potential to reduce energy usage in data centers and improve reliability in mission-critical applications.
